Braunlage and the Harz
The health resort Braunlage is one of the oldest winter sports centre's in Germany. The first registered ski club in Germany was founded here in 1892 (simultaneously with Todtnau in the Black Forest). It is surrounded by the Harz National Park at an altitude of 550 m in the city and up to 971 m on Mount Wurmberg. The first recorded settlement here goes back to the 13th century and in 1531 for the first time the name "Brunlohe" appeared. The development to become a popular tourist centre within the Harz started with the connection to the Southern Harz Railway Network from Walkenried to Tanne via Braunlage. At the end of the 19th century the, Buessig bus company, conquered the Harz and the first bus connection was established between Bad Harzburg to Braunlage.
Today, the attractive and lively town Braunlage is an ideal starting point for adventures around the Harz. You can spend active holidays here or simply relax.
Winter sport is still the main attraction, but other activities throughout the year offer fantastic opportunities to enjoy your holiday, starting from hiking to relaxing, Braunlage offers it all.
